CAMBODIAN RIEL TO EXPAND ACROSS LAOS, AND VIETNAM

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has announced that it is embarking on an expansion of the Cambodian riel’s use, connecting payments to businesses in Laos and Vietnam via its Bakong online banking system.

This initiative follows the central bank’s linking of payment systems with Thailand, an achievement that spurred the decision to extend the riel payment reach to other ASEAN countries.

FINANCE MINISTRY DEVELOPING DRAFT DIGITAL POLICY, 'WILL STIMULATE SOCIETY'

Ministry of Economy and Finance is currently developing a draft of Cambodia Financial Technology Development Policy 2023-2028, and is in talks with several relevant institutions to add more inputs to it. The policy aims to stimulate the development of Cambodia’s digital economy and society, while also improving access to financial services.

Finance minister Aun Pornmoniroth during the meeting explained how the policy aims to develop financial technology on the grounds of improving financial inclusion, stabilising the financial sector and promoting financial innovation to maximise the benefits of digital transformation.

TARIFF ADJUSTMENTS TO 'STIMULATE EXPORTS, TACKLE INFLATION'

Kun Nhem, head of General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), has highlighted the intended outcomes of recently announced tariff adjustments. These include lower customs revenues but forecasted surge in Cambodia exports.

Nhem explained that the tariff changes, set to begin on July 1, aim to tackle inflation and stimulate trade and domestic investment. The nature of the tariffs and special taxes on export-import goods is such that they adapt to the evolving economic climate, achieving a balance of promoting trade activities, attracting investment and supporting the national budget.
