Prime Minister Hun Sen had announced the purpose of having expressway project was meant for one Belt one Road initiative to connect between Phnom Penh and Kandal province. It had been done 37 percent and will be fully completed by end of next year.
He further emphasis on the importance of having the expressway as it will ease the traffic congestion in Phnom Penh and will be connected to the ASEAN Highway as well as economic zones of the Greater Mekong Sub region. Besides, it will also connect the capital to the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port’s new container terminal in Kandal province’s Kien Svay district.
During the inauguration of the expressway project in January 2019 together with China’s Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian. Prime Minister Hun Sen had mentioned the development plan aim to help by improving the livelihoods of local people and reduce poverty. The country will need the support from the international community such as China and others.
The third Belt and Road expressway project, cost USD 273 million funded by China. It had a total length of 52 km.
