No Regret to Startup in Cambodia

The startup scene in Cambodia has begun to flourish. Internet and mobile penetration are high and the country is getting more attractive destination for startup entrepreneurs, remote workers, and digital nomads.

According to the recent interview conducted by media with the owner of Aniwaa, he had further shared as below:

“I moved to Cambodia four years ago to run my business, a startup focusing on emerging tech comparisons, and I haven’t looked back since.

When I first came to Cambodia, I realized that I could run my startup from Phnom Penh and that the city offers an attractive quality of life and cost of living.

Phnom Penh is a charming capital: art deco and colonial buildings are scattered throughout the city, along with markets that will keep anyone entertained (and perhaps, at times, scratching their heads!). Foodies and coffee lovers will also find their fix in Phnom Penh. The city offers an abundance of tasty and cheap street food as well as many fairly priced Western restaurants (for those days when you miss home).”

Turkey, Cambodia aim to boost trad to $1 billion

Turkey and Cambodia have agreed to increase bilateral trade to $US1 billion in the near future, Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced.

Hun Sen flew to Turkey after his Brussels visit and met Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

The two leaders agreed to increase bilateral trade between Turkey and Cambodia and adding that Cambodia will open Turkey embassy in 2019. He had further commented that the country and Turkey have a strong and cooperative relationship.

According to Turkish foreign ministry said on its web site, bilateral trade was worth $US108 million in 2015.

The two leaders signed eight memorandums of understanding (MOU) including in the areas of education and agriculture.

Japan affection on Khmer fashion

Men Seyha who’s often named as Oliva Kong, a 28 yrs. old young Cambodian Fashion designer did not graduated & major design from University. His talent and strong interest in this field had created him as a young designer with his first ever collection inspired by traditional Khmer costumes - masked dance drama called Lakhon Khol

His self-taught has put his passion for design into a collection to be presented on runways at Japan International Fashion Gala this coming December.

This is his breakthrough compared to his previous collections which is more on western style. In this latest designs, it will feature six sets of Khmer contemporary dresses.

Women on closing work gap

Entrepreneurship is a powerful force for economic advancement, but women starting their own businesses still facing more hurdles compare to men. That is what Kheav Thida faced to set up her business in Cambodia.

Women are turning entrepreneurs inspired by their passion, an aspiration to solve a problem, and to be financially independent of the job system. Many are achieving success in the vibrant business climate of Southeast Asia.

Unlike in the past when the decision to start a business was often triggered by necessity, these days many women are attracted to entrepreneurship because they see an opportunity.

Funding is crucial in order for them to start a business. However, a large number of women do not have property or assets to their name. Hence, they encounter a problem while applying for loans due to lack of collateral.

When it comes to financial access, especially bank loans, the gender gap remains wide, according to a study by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (Escap). This is something that men are more likely than women to possess.

Cambodia's own travel booking platform targets jet-setting families and locals

Domestic holiday travel for Cambodians is often group-orientated. A new hotel booking service Bayonia.com, with 5,000 subscribers and hoping to achieve goal of 10,000 by the end of the year, intend to make travel seamless.

Since it’s launched, it had featured 85 hotels. The founder - Meas Sinal interviewed by Southeast Asia Globe about this business. He had further shared that Bayonia is the leading Cambodian hotel booking platform for local travelers who love to travel with families, kids and groups of friends. The platform provides exclusive access to boutique hotels, luxury hotels and resorts tailor-made for Cambodians.

The company had planned in future to provide locals with tours and programs nearby the hotels. Besides, the price range is special for locals, and specially negotiate for their clients.

Battambang will soon be added into their service platform and other provincial capitals as well as popular weekend destinations around Phnom Penh. At the same time, several talk terms is on-going with potential partners in Myanmar and Laos, as the markets and customer needs are similar.

Mixing 'spicy' cocktails with fresh Cambodian ingredients

In the famous Pub Street in downtown Siem Reap, one can sample everything from bedpan cocktails to cheap beers at the bars.

Among all, that is one place which highly recommended & a must visit is Asana Bar, which had been in operation almost seven years ago. This bar had constantly maintain its standard, thanks to its unique cocktails with a mix of Khmer ingredients and white wine. Located in the town centre, patronising this one-of-a-kind bar gives visitors the impression they are in a rural village.

Asana Bar is in traditional wooden design as in the past is belong to a family which was built in 1960s. A contemporary designed “modern house”, it had categorize as the last traditional house in Phsar Chas area. The bar’s owner, Un Sophary, is proud to to show this rural, Khmer-styled house in Siem Reap to all foreign guests who visited there.

Asana Bar mainly serves Khmer traditional and Western-styled cocktails created by bar owner Sophary. She uses ingredients such as turmeric, ginger, a paddy herb, kaffir lime leaves and white rice wine. Her cocktail blends are a mark of her success as they are unique, and nobody else has managed to copy the recipes thus far.

She further stressed that except for white wine that is blended into the cocktails, the rest of the ingredients are uniquely Khmer. She even teaches guests how to mix three kinds of wine with ingredients such as ginger, tamarind water and Asana Sling for $15. It includes bites such as meats which go with the cocktails. Now guests able to try their own hand-make cocktail masterpieces with local ingredients.

Another popular cocktail is her creation - Asana Sling. It’s like the Singapore Sling, but she added in traditional Khmer herb wine to the blend. The bar is open from 5pm to 2am and located at house No. 7, Modul 1 Village (2nd entrance in front of the provincial hospital) near Pub Street in Siem Reap town.
