A DISEASE TRACKER BACKED BY GATES AND ZUCKERBERG TACKLES COVID-19 

A partnership between the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation enabled researchers in Cambodia to sequence and confirm the country’s first case of COVID-19 in a matter of days — not the weeks it could typically take.

KINGDOM, RUSSIA SET TO BOOST TRADE, INVESTMENT

Cambodia and Russia had pledged to increase bilateral trade and investment. The Kingdom aims to diversify its market through the Eurasia Economic Union (EAEU).

Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong, whom met with Russian Ambassador to Cambodia Dmitry Tsvetkov said both countries had good diplomatic relations which continued receiving strong support by Russian on Cambodia’s economic growth.

He further added that since 2015, the country had signed 51 agreements to boost trade, and investments in the financial sector, agriculture and more. Last year, bilateral trade reached $55.39 million and presently, government is reviewing 14 Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) which expected to be sign soon. It will focus on tourism, education, law and youth.

CAMBODIA'S CONSTRUCTION SECTOR REMAINS STABLE 

The Cambodian Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction reported that construction industry in the country remains stable despite global facing serious downturn due to COVID-19.

According to source reported that ministry’s spokesperson, Seng Lot disclosed that construction projects are on the rise in Southeast Asian country. In end February this year, more than 500 construction projects applied for permits with ministry, compared to last year, which is only 300 applications. This had showed the industry is not severely affected.

CAMBODIA NAMED WORLD'S BEST TOURIST DESTINATION

Cambodia has been named as the world’s best tourist destination for its rich heritage, public safety and friendliness of its people.

The country won the accolade from the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association’s (PATWA) International Travel Award for Best Destination despite the global coronavirus outbreak that has dampened the global tourism industry.

PATWA’s Cambodia chapter chairman, Thourn Sinan said the award for the Best Destination would boost the nation’s global popularity.

This will be boosted by cost reductions resulting from the creation of more direct flights between the UAE and Southeast Asia. And it will be further driven by a push to expand exports from traditional strongholds in the Middle East and North Africa into the wider Asian marketplace.
