PHNOM PENH PORT REPORTS SOUND 2022 PERFORMANCE 

Public-listed river-port operator Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) reported sound business performance for year 2022 amidst regional and global economic uncertainty.

In a filing to the Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX) on January 10, the state-owned enterprise said it handled 3,783 cargo vessels at its facilities in 2022, soaring by 64.34 per cent from 2,302 recorded in 2021.

Meanwhile, oil, gas and cargo rose by 5.16 per cent to 4.044 million tons, and container increased by 19.72 per cent to 417,696 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), it added.

A TEU is an inexact unit of cargo capacity used in the shipping industry roughly equivalent to a container with internal dimensions measuring about 20 feet long, eight feet wide and 8.5 feet tall, or a volume roughly 38.5 cubic meters.

PP MEGA TRANSPORT SYSTEM STUDIES AT FINAL STAGE 

The studies about mega transport system – sky train, monorail, and subway – in Phnom Penh are being finalized and the investment will likely be under the public-private partnership, according to Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport released that the results of the studies will be submitted to the government for consideration and approval.

The ministry has given the green light to foreign firms from China and Japanese International Cooperation Agency to conduct feasibility studies on the mega transport system in the capital.

The government has previously prioritized the subway train development in Phnom Penh as the mega transportation system.

CAMPAIGN PURSUED AS SEA GAMES APPROACH

The national committees organising the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games will pursue their promotional campaign in a bid to prepare the public for the sporting extravaganza, which Cambodia host for the first time in history.

Both the Cambodian SEA Games Organising Committee (CAMSOC) and Cambodian ASEAN Para Games Organising Committee (CAMAPGOC) will erect banners and signs throughout the country from mid-January.

Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism and permanent vice-president of the committees, said: “This campaign will ensure the games will be at the forefront of people’s minds, and demonstrate Cambodia’s readiness to host, before the events begin.”

INDUSTRY MINISTRY, JICA SIGN WATER SUPPLY AGREEMENT

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation and  Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) co-signed an agreement on “Project for Formulation of the Development Plan for Urban Water Supply” which will contribute to improve access to high-quality, safe, sustainable and affordable water in Cambodia.

The signing ceremony was held on January 12 with ministry secretary of state, Oum Sotha and JICA chief representative Kamei Haruko in attendance at the ministry headquarters.
