KINGDOM PLAYS 'EXCELLENT' ROLE IN MEDIATING CRISES 

Since becoming a member of ASEAN in 1999, Cambodia has chaired two previous ASEAN summits – in 2002 and in 2012. The Kingdom is currently hosting its third summit from November 10-13.

Although Cambodia is a small country, it has been able to negotiate with many powerful nations over contentious issues related to South China Sea, Korean Peninsula, Myanmar crisis and Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Despite some turbulence recent years, Cambodia has used ASEAN forum to realise economic gains for the region by moving free trade deals forward such as Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

NBC, VN NAT'L BANK INK FINTECH, PAYMENTS DEAL 

The Cambodia and Vietnam central banks had early this month entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in financial innovation and payment systems to accelerate development in the sector and boost cross-border payments between the two neighboring ASEAN nations.

The MoU was signed by National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) governor Chea Chanto and his State Bank of Vietnam counterpart Nguyen Thi Hong, and witnessed by both countries prime ministers.

“The MoU aimed to enhance the cooperation framework for the development of the fintech and payment system between two countries,” the NBC said in a statement.

CAMBODIA, THAI PMs PUSH FOR $15 BILLION TRADE IN TWO YEARS 

Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Thai counterpart General Prayut Chan-o-cha have discussed concrete measures to promote bilateral trade exchange, with the goal of reaching USD 15 billion in two years.

Both prime ministers expressed their satisfaction at the increase in bilateral trade exchange despite the challenges caused by Covid-19, and other bilateral cooperation.

“Hun Sen also asked the Thai side to buy more Cambodian rice and facilitate procedures for the import of more Cambodian agricultural products into Thailand,” the ministry said.

CAMBODIA'S FIRST WILDLIFE AND AQUARIUM PARK OPEN IN NOVEMBER

ANGKOR WILDLIFE & AQUARIUM, a park with “rare” fish, other animals, and various species in Cambodia opened officially on 1 November 2022.

It is located along National Road 6A, in Kbon village, Khchas commune, Sot Nikum district, Siem Reap Province.

The park about 10,000 sqm, featuring freshwater and marine fish species in Cambodia and several imported from abroad. The first phase of the park features displays of various species of animals, including tigers from South Africa, bears, turtles, and mountain crocodiles.

KANDAL BOAT RACES DRAW BIG CROWDS OVER OCTOBER 29-30

The two days of boat racing at Bassac River in Kandal province’s Takhmao town came to an end on October 30, Prime Minister Hun Sen compliment the event due to Cambodia peace and progression across all sectors of the economy and society.

He noted that this year, the government is unable to hold an official celebration of the water festival in the capital as Cambodia prepares to host the ASEAN summit and related meetings in November.

He attributed to the spirit of solidarity and national unity that was the result of the peace Cambodia enjoyed.
