A Message From Our CEO 

The past few month until now had been a roller coaster for every one of us. The situation around the world about COVID-19 continues to evolve massively and we are dealing with a significant global challenge.

Cambodia government had been tighten their border controls and travel restrictions as the pandemic threat escalates. While this is for the best, it poses new challenges for businesses trying to carry on as usual. Majority companies in Cambodia has been implementing safety measures commensurate with the increase stringent precautions advised by the local authorities. Since March, facilities & entertainment industry are compulsory to suspend operation and Khmer New Year holidays in April had been deferred as the government emphasis on “Social Distancing”. Religious gatherings were banned and most venues that could host large groups were closed in order to prevent community transmission.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT EXPORTS UP TO 20 PERCENT IN Q1

Agricultural commodities amounting to US$2.9 million were exported to foreign markets in first quarter of this year, a 20 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

A report from Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries showed that the agricultural commodities exported comprises rice, dry sliced cassava, fresh cassava, cassava starch, cashew, fresh banana, soybean, mangoes, pepper and rubber.

Top elite universities from around the world are offering free online courses. These types of learning opportunities can be a great way for job seekers to boost their skill set, gain valuable knowledge, and enhance their likelihood of career progression, especially during this epidemic period.

Due to the break of school and other educational institutions had been extended for an indefinite period. The Minister of Education Cambodia, Hang Chuon Naron encouraged the locals to do e-learning. Several prestigious universities such as Harvard, Stanford and MIT are offering free online classes with complete curriculum.

CAMBODIA TO GET ITS FIRST WIND POWER FARM

The Cambodian government is close to sign a deal with a local subsidiary French-owned, Singapore-based  leading renewable energy company, The Blue Circle to construct the energy-starving country’s first wind power farm.

According to Victor Jona, director general of energy at Cambodia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy. The signing partner would be the country’s state utility firm Electricite du Cambodge (EDC).


CAMBODIA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2020

The Cambodian International Film Festival (CIFF) held at Chaktomuk Conference Hall on 13 March 2020. The Kingdom & Global stories and films were premiered for a period of 10-days, from 13 to 22 March, taken place in Phnom Penh’s theaters. (10 venues, over 160 screenings, over 130 films).

The 10th CIFF presented 157 movies from 44 countries, dealing with different topics such as gender and women in the Asian film industry. 15% of these movies directed by Cambodian filmmakers, majority young Cambodian women.

KINGDOM PULLS FACTORIES

Covid-19 had been several months disrupting global trade and economy. Though six had shut down but 77 new factories had set up their operation in the Kingdom.

For the first quarter of this year, the total number of factories register with Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation has reached 1,801 according to a senior ministry officer.

Ministry’s secretary of state, Heng Sokkong attributed the growth is due to the attractive open policies and sufficient supply of raw materials. He further indicate that while the six factories’ closure had put 6,052 workers out of jobs, the new factories are expected to create 27,909 new ones which should be proud of especially when other countries still struggling with Covid-19. The number reported exclude factories that had suspended their operations due to pandemic.

EARTH DAY AT 50: A LOOK TO THE PAST OFFERS HOPE FOR TH PLANET'S FUTURE

April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and the birth of modern environmentalism. Everyone should give each other a virtual “high five” for the impressive environmental progress that the society has accomplished during this span. 

Since 1970, Earth Day has increased awareness of the planet we live on, and encouraged people to learn more about pollution, climate change, endangered species, and many other environmental issues. It must be a historic moment when citizens of the world rise up in a united call for the creativity, innovation, ambition, and bravery that we need to meet our climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future.

JAPANESE FIRMS TO LAUNCH BIOMASS, SOLAR POWER GENERATION IN CAMBODIA

Japanese renewable energy producer Aura Green Energy Co. has teamed up with a compatriot partner to launch a hybrid power generation business combining biomass and solar energy in Cambodia on the year 2021, aiming to help secure stable power supply.

Secondly, Aura Green Energy and solar panel system provider WWB Corp. plan to build a plant for power generation using rice husk as fuel in a rice mill near Phnom Penh, along with solar panels, an Aura Green Energy spokeswoman told NNA last week.
